Better, Now. is a collaborative call-to-action led by Shared Lives Plus, NDTi, and Community Catalysts, designed to challenge commissioners and directors of adult social care to rethink their approach. Our goal is to move away from outdated and costly systems that often don’t improve lives. Instead, we believe that all people needing support should have access to community-driven, person-centred care models that are both high-quality and cost-effective.

We know that better care is possible now. By advocating for smaller, community-based care models, we offer viable alternatives to traditional institutional care that can deliver safe, life-enhancing support. These strength-based approaches focus on building meaningful relationships, enhancing individual independence, and utilising local resources more efficiently. Our approach ensures that care remains personal, rooted in communities, and centred on improving real lives.

Shared Lives Plus

Shared Lives Plus is the membership organisation for Shared Lives, representing Shared Lives carers, schemes and Homeshare organisations. Our vision is a kinder, stronger society built on sharing our lives and homes. We help build communities where everyone lives a full life, regardless of the support they need. We do this by encouraging Shared Lives care and Homeshare to flourish, creating the right structures to guide and uplift people who want to share their lives and homes. We have a unique voice which we use to assist local Shared Lives and Homeshare organisations and Shared Lives carers through policy, guidance, advice, and legal work. NDTi

NDTi is an independent, not for profit organisation. We have worked alongside people, communities, policy makers, support organisations and services for over 30 years. Our programmes cover all life stages and include research, evaluation, coproduction and organisational change. Better is possible now and programmes already transforming local areas include Community Led Support which is changing how adult social care is delivered; Small Supports enabling people to live at home rather than as inpatients; and Change for Inclusion which is reviewing and developing local SEND systems. Community catalysts is a social enterprise that works in partnership across the UK to make sure people are part of strong, inclusive communities with opportunities to connect, create and contribute.
